Alpha-lipoic acid
Alpha-lipoic acid is a fatty acid made by our body. It plays a key role in metabolism and energy production. It also acts as an antioxidant, protecting cells from damage and helping to restore the levels of other antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E. Alpha-lipoic acid also reduces inflammation. Several studies have shown that they reduce inflammation associated with insulin resistance, cancer, liver disease, heart disease and other disorders.
Recommended dose: 300-600 mg daily.
Potential side effects: If you take a recommended dose, there is no need for supplements. If you are taking diabetes medication, then you may need to monitor your blood sugar level.
Not recommended for: pregnant women.
Curcumin
Curcumin is an integral part of spicy turmeric. It provides several impressive health benefits. It reduces inflammation of diabetes, heart disease, inflammatory bowel disease and cancer. Curcumin also appears to be very helpful in reducing inflammation and improving the symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Recommended dose: 100-500 mg daily when taken with piperine. Doses up to 10 grams per day have been studied and considered safe but can cause digestive problems.
Potential side effects: Do not exceed recommended dose
Not recommended for: pregnant women.
Fish oil
Fish oil supplements contain omega-3 fatty acids, which are vital for good health. They can reduce diabetes-related inflammation, heart disease, cancer and many other conditions. It also reduces the inflammation and muscle damage that occur after exercise. In one study, levels of inflammatory marker IL-6 were 32% lower in people taking 2 grams of omega-3 supplements compared to a non-consuming group.
Recommended dose: 1-1.5 grams of omega-3. Look for fish oil supplements with imperceptible mercury content.
Potential side effects: Fish oil can reduce blood weight in higher doses, which may increase bleeding.
